By double-clicking these controls, you can skip tracks or repeat the previous one. You can also use voice commands to ask them to switch modes or set alarms. The right earcup can be covered by your hand to enable ambient mode, to allow you to hear what is going on around you without removing the headphones.
The Q30 headphones offer a long battery life. The Q30 was able to last for a full hour in our tests when ANC was turned on than the other models. This gives you plenty of time to prepare for audiophiles long flights or a day at the office. They can be easily recharged with the included USB-C cable and you’ll be able to see warnings when they’re about to run empty.

Focal’s Bathys Wireless are a set of powerful over-ear headphones that provide both active noise cancellation and Bluetooth playback. They’re designed to be a premium, high-end headphone that are great for listening to podcasts and music on the go, but sound amazing when used for home use by audiophiles too. They’re more expensive than other similar headphones but their superior audio quality is the primary selling feature.
The Focal Bathys are packaged in a small, attractive white box with a cloth finish. It contains all the accessories you will need. There’s a fold-flat headphone carry case, USB-C to USB-C cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.
They’re powered by a decent 600mAh battery that can take you through a whole day of listening, and include an audio input for wired use. When they’re wirelessly connected, they’re connected via Bluetooth and you can control their functions through an app (now named Focal and Naim which is probably in the same vein as their English Naim brand’s products for audio that are network-aware) or using the dedicated button on the left earcup that scrolls between ANC profiles such as’silent’,’soft’ ‘transparent’ and ‘full’.
Utilizing the app, you are able to alter different settings such as the LED brightness and EQ presets, including a “music profile’ that is more neutral and brighter than other presets and also their battery duration. You can also select the ANC level and mode and select an ‘acoustic environment that adjusts the sensitivity to mimic the sound of the headphones in a different room.
The Focal Bathys have a bass-rich sound profile that adds more warmth and punch to your most loved tracks. The result is that instruments and vocals be muted, while other details such as cymbals may be less prominent than other headphones. The headphones are also less effective in active noise cancellation, compared to other over-ears that have higher-end technology, such as the Sony WH1000XM5 and Apple AirPods Max.
Sony WH-1000XM5
Sony has earned a reputable reputation for its headphones and the WH-1000XM5 is no exception. It is at the top of the mainstream over ear headphone market and is in the ‘luxury’ lifestyle area where brands like Apple, Montblanc, Bang & Olufsen and Montblanc are located. The XM5s have a premium cost, but should you be able to afford it, there are a few better over the ear wireless headphones on the market.
The XM5s have a lot of features that simplify the lives of the listener and automate tasks that they’d otherwise be required to do manually. Sony’s DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music compressed to near hi-res) and Bluetooth’s LDAC Technology, are both included. This allows high-quality audio to be streamed at bitrates that are higher than Bluetooth. It also has a built-in microphone for making calls hands-free.
The XM5 headphones aren’t any different from the previous generation headphones from WH, in terms of noise cancellation. They are one of the best at reducing the constant drones that can be heard in subway and train carriages. The XM5s are great at their job of separating listeners from background noise of airports and busy streets, too.
The sound quality is also very good. The XM5s don’t have as much detail in the low-frequency range as the XM4, but they do have a greater sense clarity and a greater sense of openness. The bass on Rage Against The Machine’s Bullet in the Head shows the Sonys power and clarity but without affecting the rest of the music. The XM5s are also able to provide precise and accurate bass notes on Massive Attack’s Angel.
Battery life is also good, providing up to 30 hours of audio with ANC active and up to 40 hours when it’s off. This is more than enough to cover the weekend or a few days of heavy use.
The only issue is that the XM5s don’t have any dust or water resistance protection. Sony actually advises against sweating into them or taking them out in the rain. This might not be a problem for everyone else, but for those who spend long hours in the gym or live in a rainy area it could be a big issue.
Apple AirPods Max
The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of wireless headphones over-ear that come with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. They have 40mm Apple-designed dynamic drivers with an audio profile that is neutral and is focused on the mids and highs while not going too loud at either end of the spectrum. This makes them great for both movies and music. They also provide higher fidelity compared to other headphones.
The headphones have a lightweight build that feels comfortable on the head. The ear cups, which are constructed of memory foam and covered with woven fabric, fit comfortably over the ears, do not put pressure on the sides or forehead. Ear cups can be flipped and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges provide an incredibly firm, yet not too much clamping force to ensure that the earcups remain in place during listening sessions.
A small button on the the right ear cup can be used to toggle noise cancellation modes. It also has a pushable jog-dial-like button, similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can turn to adjust the volume and press it once, twice or thrice for playback controls. Pressing and holding the button invokes Siri. The buttons are simple to use and are well-placed, but I would have liked to see a power button that would switch off the cordless headphones when in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode when removed from your ears or put in their case. They only wake up when you put them on your head again.
Another cool feature is spatial audio, which utilizes the accelerometers and gyroscopes of the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine the direction you’re going, and then repositions the sound to create the illusion that they’re coming from these locations. This creates a cinema-like experience for videos and movies made in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. Only iOS devices can be used to listen to the spatial audio.
The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I’d be slightly smug about going into an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew that they’d be outdone next year by the new model. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and improved battery performance, so it’s hard to justify the extra cost for most people.
